CrossFit SWPortland wants to build strength and community
(Portland, OR) A longtime Portland couple, Steve and Shannon Weiland, are opening a new fitness center, CrossFit SWPortland, in Goose Hollow. The Grand Opening celebration will be held on Sat. Feb. 4 from 4-6:30 pm at their new location: 1226 SW 16th Ave., Portland, 97205. Visitors can meet the trainers as well as participate in an optional workout and drawing for special prizes; healthy snacks will be provided.
“We are so excited to expand our CrossFit community,” says co-owner Shannon Weiland. “We just know it’s the right time, despite the poor economy.”
Shannon’s co-owner and husband Steve Weiland, an avid skier, cyclist and certified CrossFit trainer, began training friends and neighbors in their single-car garage in Southwest Portland’s Hayhurst neighborhood over a year ago. Participants were quickly hooked on the fitness program that combines the best of every sport into a comprehensive fitness program.
“People really love the constant variety as well as the incredible results,” says Shannon Weiland. “But the best part is the camaraderie. It’s such a supportive, positive and friendly atmosphere. People can’t wait to come back.”
According to Steve Weiland, CrossFit SWPortland’s has a wide range of clientele. “We have athletes of all abilities and ages working out here, from pre-teens to a trainer’s 80-year-old mother-in-law,” he says. “We can scale any exercise to anyone’s level” Each class consists of a warm-up, skill training, and a workout of the day, followed by a stretch and cool down. Activities range from weight-lifting to jumping rope to lunges. “It’s always different and it’s always challenging.” Personal training sessions are also available.
CrossFit SWPortland is part of a national confederation of over 2,500 CrossFit affiliates around the world. CrossFit is an internet-based grassroots movement that is popping up in garages and warehouses across the country. “It’s becoming very popular because it’s a fitness program that works and it’s a great way to connect with the community,” says Shannon Weiland.
